This is an extremely good book, especially compared to some of the other XML books out there that I've looked at--many seem surprised that you would be curious about actually using XML programmatically, instead of just typing it up and viewing it in a browser.
If you don't know where to start with XML, this book will give you a thorough introduction--in fact, if you do know a decent amount about XML, you may want to skim the first couple of chapters, since they are so thorough. I found it easy, using this book as a guide, to determine which of several parsing strategies to employ.
The book spends a lot of time comparing and contrasting different options. It also did discussing DTDs and Schemas thoroughly, and did a good job of highlighting the substantial and important differences.
I was more surprised that generating XML programmatically wasn't covered more thoroughly. The book was smart enough to point out that large quantities of data can't all simply be handled in memory, but didn't discuss a streaming approach to writing XML. I ended up writing my own custom XML generation code--it wasn't that hard given a good grounding in object-oriented programming, but I'm still surprised there was no mention of this. Still, this was by far the best book on the market, and it did teach me everything I needed to know on the subject to do what I needed to do.
I would recommend this book very highly to anyone who needs to understand how to use XML in Java, regardless of their experience level with XML.
This book has certainly generated a lot of controversy. I read it several months ago and thought it was pretty good.
10 Free Java Programing Books for beginners - download, pdf and HTML
The book assumes you know Java but not XML. Chapters vary in focus between the two. I found it quite readable. It's purely event-driven.
If you get lost reading this part of the book or the associated code, it's proably the API, not the author. Neither of these APIs is particularly geared for Java. The fact that it's beta doesn't disturb me, but then I believe in testing. There are some fairly esoteric topics included, for example, XML-RPC, but in general, the topics covered do include what you might hope for. As I said, I thought this was pretty good when I first read it, and I still feel that way.
To be useful a programming book need to deliver on three major strengths and countless minor ones too ; theory, examples and ease of reference. The theory behind XML is explained in a very easy to follow and pleasingly concise manner. Not only is there all you need to know about how XML works there's plenty too on why it works the way it does and particularly useful information on its quirks and shortcomings.
The theory is just limited to bare Java or XML either.
Lots of them. The index is comprehensive and accurate and makes all the difference between the book being background reading which it is but also enables it to earn its place on your desktop and believe me, as you're getting into implementing XML for real, you'll need it.
I found it an excellent overview of the available technologies. The book is structured to alternate between XML-oriented and Java-oriented chapters, building up your skills in a sensible, incremental way.
On the down side, the book had a few typos very few given the extraordinary pressure to get this book on the shelves as quickly as possible. This will probably be a strength of the book in the future, since JDOM is a superior API and will probably be widely adopted; it's not any use to me now though, since according to jdom.
