This book is how light behaves and how it changes the picture. It covers basic principles to understand the lightning of pictures. Since the book focuses rather on principles than on certain situations allthough it uses some cases to illustrate what has been said it is a book that had a very high value for me. It helped me to "see light" in photos.

The book by itself covers the topic in a systematic way. The layout is good. The pictures and scetches used in this book where a very good addition to the text and helped to understand the text. Also they don't cover half of the book, so you will get a lot of content. The reason I don't give it five stars is that well over half the time a diagram is a page turn away from the reference to it in the text. The actual content of the book is exceptionally well presented, detailed, and easily understood even by someone with virtually no knowledge of the terms conventionally used in photography.

Based around the physics of light but don't let that put you off and how light behaves on different surfaces. It demonstrates how to light a series of different objects including glass and metal. After reading the chapter on glass I immediately set about experimenting and produced the best pictures I've ever taken of shiny transparent things.

If you use studio lights then this book is a must for your bookshelves. Since I am somewhat new to serious photography, this book was my introduction to making light work for, rather than against, me. To a more serious photographer, this might just fill in some basics.

While the authors suggested this book does not have all the answers, it sure gave me a head start in the right direction. Once I get a good understanding of these fundamentals, I can elaborate on my own and with my own devices. It can be a little overwhelming at first but it is worth it after a while. It might be specially important if you're a photographer who mainly works in a controled environment such as studio and wants to better understand how to control the lights upon their photography. This is the best text I have found so far on photographic lighting. This is the type of book that you read through once to determine where everything is and then pull off the shelf from time to time to help you solve problems.

It covers how light behaves and why. It gives you the tools to solve lighting problems and analyze what is happening in a photograph from a lighting perspective. Great book. This textbook made me feel stupid. Not because this book was smart, but because of how stupid it was. I felt like I lost a few IQ points reading this. Their examples were either completely wrong or not very well thought out.
